Air Bag Fabric is a woven nylon fabric used to construct inflatable cushions for passenger safety in cars. Commonly composed of Nylon 6.6/66 material, Air Bag Fabric must be impermeable to gases and flameproof for best performance. Coated or uncoated versions exist depending on its purpose and are intended to work with specific airbag modules; once hit by accident occupants, its airbag inflates due to gas generated from its control unit.
At the onset of an accident, the control unit activates its gas generator propellant to quickly inflate an airbag filled with nitrogen or other gases stored within its fabric bag - an airbag is typically stored within its small compartment in either steering wheel boss or dashboard. An airbag control sensor detects vehicle occupant movement during an impact and alerts its control unit, prompting an explosion that inflates this bag which absorbs impact energy.
Problems associated with modern airbags stem from their fabric bases not being suitable for production without rubberization, due to lacking mechanical properties needed to store, deploy and absorb impact energy of an occupant during a car collision. Furthermore, fabric must retain its elasticity and stiffness after impact so as to act as a barrier preventing deformed doors from hitting an occupant directly.
The material addresses this challenge by creating an airbag base fabric with high levels of elongation and tensile strength but low hardness, achieved using multifilament yarn with high percentage fineness rewoven in warp and weft directions before being treated to minimize shrinkage after weaving.
